Banned Hashtags – and how to check if you’re using them

Did you know that Instagram has a list of banned hashtagsand if you use them on your posts, Instagram will limit the reach of your content (sometimes known as shadow banning)

This means that your content will not reach your existing or new audiences, and your profile will not organically grow.

The list of banned hashtags is extensive and is constantly updated. Instagram doesn’t publish a list of the offending hashtags, which is why regular checking is an essential part of your Insta routine.

Why are some hashtags banned?

Instagram limits, or ‘bans’ certain hashtags because of previously posted content using that tag has breached Instagram’s community standards.

Banned hashtags include seemingly harmless terms like:

  • #beautyblogger
  • #bikinibody
  • #date
  • #dating
  • #romance
  • #single
  • #valentinesday
  • #adulting
  • #desk
  • #dm
  • #nasty
  • #prettygirl
  • #streetphoto
  • #workflow

But the great news is, there’s an easy way to check your hashtags.

How to check for banned hashtags using the ‘metahashtags’ website

see original Instagram post here.

  • keep groups of hashtags saved to the Notes app on your phone
  • regularly check using the hashtag checker website
  • take note of what hashtags other profiles in your niche are using
  • regularly change up the hashtags you use
If you use the same hashtags on every post, Instagram may this your profile is a fake/bot account.
